The American Patriot Act.
Below is a wealth of information you should be aware of:
"Enacting policies that allow the government to enter our homes in secret and to
collect highly personal information won’t make us safer, but it will make us less
free," says ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero. |
|
"Across the country, citizens have been forming Bill of Rights defense committees to fight what they consider the most egregious curbs on liberties contained in the Patriot Act." "To date, 89 cities have passed resolutions condemning the Patriot Act, with at least a dozen more in the works and a statewide resolution against the act close to being passed in Hawaii." |
"The act
threatens freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and Constitution, a claim reiterated
by all the rally's speakers: Joel Skousen, editor of World Affairs Brief and author of
several books on home security; political activists Shari Holweg and Ruth Robinson; KTKK
radio co-owner Tom Draschil; Warren Keuffel, a Unitarian and ACLU member; and Richard
Mack, a former Graham County, Ariz., sheriff and Second Amendment activist. |
"The actions of the government have been shrouded in a
cloak of secrecy that is incompatible with democratic government. Hundreds of non-citizens
have been rounded up and detained, many for months, in violation of constitutional
protections, judicial decisional authority and INS policy. The government has repeatedly
resisted requests for information regarding the detainees by loved ones, lawyers and the
press; it has denied detainees access to legal representatives; and has conducted its
hearings in secret, in some cases denying the very existence of such hearings. In
a democracy, the actions of the government must be transparent or our ability to vote on
policies and the people who create those policies becomes meaningless. |
"The USA Patriot Act is an insult to Americans. The name, itself, is insulting, given what the Act contains and what it will someday be known for: its complete abdication of democratic law and principles. It should be called the Constitution Shredding Act. In particular, it utterly relinquishes any semblance of due process, violates the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Eighth Amendments, and unacceptably mixes aspects of criminal investigations with aspects of immigration and foreign intelligence laws. Let me state it even more bluntly. This law is dangerous. It’s a travesty. What is worse is that few Americans have the slightest
idea what this law contains or what it means." |
